About Online Bike Coach

Why Coaching? Why Coach Wharton?

Coach Richard WhartonCoaching gives you the power to focus your time and attention toward achieving maximal results. Coach Wharton knows that as a coach and a mentor, he exists for the sole purpose of helping you surpass your limitations as an individual. Since 1994, Coach Wharton has been a pioneer in training individuals through the use of technology and wattage. So, if you're wondering just how effective your training can be, Coach Wharton can help you optimize workouts within your given constraints and empower you to reach levels of performance you never thought possible.

Philosophy

Imagine a fresh rubber band, right out of the box. It's a bit stiff, and if you put it between your thumbs and stretch it immediately, it will break. But if you stretch it just a little in one direction and release it, and then twist it a little and stretch it more in another direction, and then stretch even more in a third direction, you will slowly loosen up the rubber band and expand its stretched-out circumference.

The area circumscribed by the rubber band is analogous to your performance envelope. We start by stretching your aerobic base for a few weeks, then let you recover. Then we switch modes to improve your performance in crits, requiring a different type of training, allowing one part of the envelope to expand while the other retract a bit. Proper training will, over time, yield better performances in ALL aspects of cycling. Everything improves, but at different rates and at different times in the year.

Technology. Application. Attention. Success.

To expand your envelope of performance, we use technology (specifically: a CompuTrainer, an outdoor power meter, CyclingPeaks software, a TrainingPeaks account, and a computer) to gather data on your body and your mindset, to analyze that data, and to communicate.

Then we apply the information gathered from all of this to establish wattage baselines, and then we create a protocol of training intensity that is designed to improve performance and tailored to your needs and goals.

Finally, the attention you pay to your own program, as well as the attention you get from Coach Wharton, is crucial. Details matter, and the more concepts you learn and intervals you perform, the more prepared you will be.

Put it all together, and you're primed for success, which is measured by greater fitness, better endurance, and faster riding. Keep in mind that success is an intrinsic term, meant to reflect the feeling of satisfaction that comes from the process of preparation, rather than the result. Coach Wharton can't guarantee any particular win, but he can fully prepare you for success in cycling, no matter what level of experience or competition.
